History – Wood Buffalo National Park
Established in 1922 to protect wood bison populations and the unique Peace-Athabasca Delta, the park preserves one of the largest freshwater deltas in North America. Indigenous peoples and early settlers historically used the area for hunting, trapping, and fishing. Park management introduced trails, campsites, lodges, and interpretive programs to balance access with conservation. Research monitors bison health, whooping crane populations, and wetland ecology. Wood Buffalo remains a UNESCO World Heritage site for ecological significance.
