History – Volcanoes National Park

The park dates back to colonial-period conservation. It was set aside in the early 20th century to guard gorilla populations and forest. Dian Fossey’s work here raised global awareness. Over time, management has grown to include community engagement, habitat restoration, and anti-poaching measures. The park remains a flagship in Rwanda’s conservation story.
