History – Table Mountain National Park
The lands that form Table Mountain National Park carry a long human and natural history. The area hosted Khoikhoi communities before European arrival. During the 19th and 20th centuries, efforts to conserve the mountain and surrounding coastline advanced slowly, culminating in formal protection in the 1990s. The park's establishment aimed to conserve unique fynbos flora and protect key coastal and mountain habitats near a growing city, while allowing managed public access and recreation.
