History – La Mauricie National Park

Established in 1970 to protect Québec’s Laurentian forests and lakes, La Mauricie preserves ecosystems representative of the region. Prior to its creation, the land was used for logging, trapping, and seasonal settlement. Park creation focused on balancing recreation with habitat protection, conserving moose, beaver, and deer populations. Trails, lakes, and campsites were planned to minimize human impact while providing access to nature. Scientific studies monitor forest regeneration, wildlife populations, and water quality. Over decades, the park became a hub for both outdoor recreation and ecological education, offering visitors a glimpse into Québec’s boreal landscapes.
