History – Kouchibouguac National Park

Established in 1969 to preserve Atlantic coastal ecosystems and provide recreational opportunities, Kouchibouguac was the site of seasonal settlements, agriculture, and Mi’kmaq use prior to park creation. Relocation of some local residents sparked protests, which shaped Canada’s later national park policies. The park protects dunes, salt marshes, bogs, and freshwater lagoons while offering public access through trails, boardwalks, and campsites. Habitat monitoring and restoration projects ensure protection of rare species and sensitive coastal areas. The park combines ecological conservation with education and recreational access.
