History – Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site
Established in 1974, Kejimkujik was created to protect both natural ecosystems and cultural heritage. The park safeguards Mi’kmaq petroglyphs, traditional travel routes, and historic settlements. Prior to park establishment, the area was used for logging, farming, and Indigenous seasonal activities. Park management developed interpretive programs, trail systems, and canoe routes while conserving forest, wetland, and aquatic habitats. Scientific monitoring ensures protection of rare species and water quality. Today, Kejimkujik serves as a model for integrating cultural and natural conservation while providing recreation opportunities for visitors.
