History – Ivvavik National Park
Established in 1984 as Canada’s first park created through Inuvialuit land claim agreements, Ivvavik protects wildlife habitat, particularly for the Porcupine caribou herd. Indigenous communities historically hunted, fished, and traveled through the area. Park management emphasizes minimal infrastructure to protect natural systems. Scientific monitoring focuses on caribou migrations, river ecology, and tundra health. The park integrates Indigenous knowledge in conservation and visitor education, highlighting cultural connections to the land.
