History – Grasslands National Park
Established in 1981, Grasslands National Park was created to protect the remaining native prairie ecosystem and its species, including endangered flora and fauna. The area had been used for cattle grazing and agriculture, which fragmented much of the original grasslands. Indigenous peoples and Métis communities historically utilized the land for hunting and seasonal camps. Park management introduced bison reintroduction programs, wildlife monitoring, and prairie restoration initiatives. Trails and interpretive signage educate visitors about the unique ecology and cultural heritage. Conservation efforts also focus on restoring native plant species and preserving open prairie habitats for sensitive wildlife.
