History – Aulavik National Park

Established in 1992 under the Inuvialuit Final Agreement, Aulavik conserves the Thomsen River valley and surrounding Arctic tundra. Indigenous communities historically used the area for seasonal hunting and travel. Park management focuses on preserving delicate tundra, muskox populations, and migratory bird habitats. No permanent infrastructure exists; visitor access relies on fly-in arrangements. Scientific research monitors muskox density, river ecology, and Arctic flora. Interpretive programs promote awareness of Indigenous cultural heritage and Arctic ecosystem conservation.
