History – Addo Elephant National Park

The reserve started in 1931 to protect the remaining local elephant population after severe declines. Rangers and conservationists expanded park boundaries over decades, adding forests and coastal components. The park later incorporated islands and a marine protected area to protect diverse habitats. Community engagement and science programs helped shape modern management focused on habitat connectivity and species recovery.
